Tokio Hotel: Un cuarteto cinco estrellas
Mientras preparan su nuevo disco, te contamos la historia de la nueva sensación de la música teen que viene de Alemania. Conocela en esta nota.
Aunque sean la banda joven más exitosa del momento, la historia de Tokio Hotel se remonta a mediados de los noventa, cuando el padrastro de los gemelos Tom y Bill Kaulitz, los insita a interesarse por algún instrumento. Desde aquellos días, estos adolescentes de Magdeburgo (localidad alemana a la orilla del río Elba) supieron que su norte estaría por el lado de la música. Así, cuando apenas habían terminado sus estudios primarios, Tom y Bill agarraron un par de teclados y realizaron una presentación frente a sus compañeros de curso. Aquella performance fue observada por Gustav Schäfer y Georg Listing, dos chicos de su edad que enseguida decidieron unirse al proyecto de los hermanos. De esta comunión nacería Devilish, banda con la cual Tom, Bill, Gustav y Georg, harían sus primeras armas y consolidarían, a base de ensayos y shows, su personalidad artística. Luego de mucho batallar, finalmente en el 2003 la discográfica Sony Music posa sus ojos en el cuarteto, pero existía un solo inconveniente: el nombre. Es allí cuando los chicos deciden adoptar el apodo de Tokio Hotel, con el que finalmente se consagrarían. Siguiendo la línea musical de un pop-rock elaborado, que mezclaba influencias de Placebo y Muse con los ritmos marciales que siempre caracterizaron a la música alemana, el grupo fue delineando un estilo muy definido. En dicho punto, también tuvo mucho que ver su imagen, en donde mezclaban las tendencias góticas y street con singular originalidad. Entonces, con su perfil bien definido, Tokio Hotel ingresa a los estudios de grabación y se pone a las órdenes de Peter Hoffman, un productor artístico que ya había ofrecido sus servicios a varios artistas norteamericanos. Sin embargo, el resultado final no convence a la discográfica, dejando al grupo a la deriva y sin contrato. “Para que durante mucho tiempo el grupo exista, Gustav, Georg, Tom y yo nos hemos hecho solos sobre el escenario y hemos fabricado nuestros propios Cd’s y sus tapas. No quiero que de repente alguien venga y diga: Ahora este es nuestro grupo, estas bajo contrato y tenes que hacer todo lo que nosotros decimos”, declaró Bill hace algunos años. A pesar del revés, el cuarteto no bajó los brazos y una temporada más tarde tenía un nuevo contrato, pero esta vez con Universal Music. Bajo esta etiqueta, Tokio Hotel publica finalmente su opera prima bajo el título de Schrei: So Laut Du Kannst (algo así como “Grita: tan alto como puedas”). El single que antecedió al lanzamiento, “Durch den Monsun”, llegó enseguida al número uno de los charts teutones y ofició de plataforma para su expansión internacional. Algo que lograron definitivamente con su segundo álbum Zimmer 483 (2006), el cual aterrizó en mercados insospechados como el español. Así, la línea ascendente que insinuaba la banda llegaría a su punto máximo en junio del 2007. Por esos días, llega Scream a las bateas de toda Europa y los Estados Unidos. El tercer disco está cantado íntegramente en inglés y se convierte en la tarjeta de presentación de Tokio Hotel en todo el planeta. Convertidos en íconos de la generación Rock Pop, consiguen una repercusión inédita y, hoy por hoy, son un emblema de la música adolescente.
